Honeybee Meadow Mahjong Set — 160 Tiles

The Joker is where this set says who it is: one honeybee seen from above, navy body striped in gold, two wide gold wings open, two angled clusters of three golden honeycomb cells beside her, and JOKER set in navy serif capitals along the bottom. All eight Jokers are identical, so a Joker reads as a Joker from across the table instead of making you study a new face each time one turns up. And the palette around it — teal with peach blush — is rare in American mahjong, where almost everything arrives in ivory and green.

The rest of the set keeps to the same garden tea table. Dots are macarons seen from the side, alternating teal and peach blush, and the last tile in the suit is an open teal-edged rectangle with a dot in each corner. Craks are brick-pink teapots and teacups with the numeral carved inside the cup. Bams are slim green stems crossing each other like wild grass, with Bam 1 a wildflower branch of pink buds and green leaves. Winds are classic capital N, E, W and S in teal, the strokes filled with a fine grid and wreathed in small pink roses. The dragons give you the open teal frame, a green-bodied dragonfly in a ring of leafy vine, and a pink-bodied dragonfly in a ring of roses and tiny yellow flowers, while the eight Flowers spread small five-petal blooms in sky blue and blush across olive vines, a different arrangement on every tile. Every line is carved rather than printed — real grooves with shadow sitting down inside them.
