Elf & Evergreen Mahjong Set — 160 Tiles

Elf & Evergreen Mahjong Set — 160 Tiles

Look at the edge of a tile: thick cream, a thin line of pine green, a thin line of red, then the deep emerald of the back. The glossy ivory-white faces are flat printed — ornaments hung from pine boughs on the Dots, bottle-brush trees on the Bams, red numerals in pine wreaths on the Craks. Tiles run 1.44 x 1.00 x 0.59 inches. Racked up, it is a full 160-tile set ready for NMJL play.

Every Tile, Colored by Hand.

You’ve seen what happens to printed tiles — the color fades, the design scratches off, and within a few seasons they look tired. Not these. Every tile is engraved into the acrylic and filled by hand, color by color. It costs more and takes longer — and it’s why your set still looks new after years of weekly play.

The Jokers are one vintage elf, in red and in green.

The Jokers are all the same little fellow: a 1950s-style elf with a round pink face, brown hair, flushed cheeks, and a pointed cap tipped to one side with a round bobble on the end. He is printed inside a scalloped border, like the perforated edge of a postage stamp, with JOKER running vertically down the left side. He comes in two colorways that alternate through the set — elf in red, elf in green — so he is easy to spot across the table without being loud about it.

The Dots count up in ornaments dangling from a pine bough at the top of the tile. The Bams are bottle-brush trees in several greens on gold trunks. The Craks set a red Chinese numeral inside a pine wreath with red berries and a red bow. The winds spell North, East, West and South in red vintage script outlined in white, framed in dark green, with a small green reindeer alongside. White Dragon is blank inside a candy-cane border with holly in the corners; Green and Red are Santa in a green cap and in a red one. Each flower carries a different Christmas stocking in a double red frame, with pine and a red bloom in the cuff. The backs are glossy emerald with one small cream eight-petal flower centered, and the art is flat printed, right on the surface.

For the Woman Whose House Is the December House

You have had your everyday set for years, and this one is not replacing it — it comes out the week the tree goes up and goes back in the box in January. You bought it for yourself, because you are the one who hosts in December and you like having something that matches the house. The red Chinese numerals in their pine wreaths are the familiar part; the elf, the stockings, the two Santas are the fun.

Buy the set you will be glad to unpack every year.
