Good Dog Blue Mahjong Set — 160 Tiles

In a set built around dogs, the Jokers are cats — and they know it. Several different faces repeat through the set: a ruffled Persian, a tuxedo, a sharp-eared cat, one with a white mask across the muzzle, all drawn in black and white line work. Under each face runs a short colored bar and then the word Joker in a serif cut, and that word changes color from tile to tile — purple, pink, blue, olive, green. It is the one place in the set where the artist breaks the rules on purpose, and it is the tile your table will comment on first.

Dots climb from that rosette through paw prints ringed in their own colors, more rings as the count rises. Craks carry a different breed per value, with a small pink numeral top left and a slim Chinese numeral below it — the only place one appears. Bams set green stalks beside doghouses in red, blue, pink and purple, with a blue hummingbird for the 1. Winds are calligraphic N, E, W and S in four colors; the dragons run a plum fire hydrant, a deep green one, and a blue dog collar with a round tag in a pale cloud frame. Flowers are two groups of four navy planters, each with a different bloom. Everything is flat printed — ink sitting on the surface, not carved in — and the backs are solid glossy cornflower blue, no pattern, no logo, on tiles that measure 1.42 x 1.02 x 0.59 inches.
